Florence Nightingale

Known as the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Florence, Italy. She became famous for her work during the Crimean War, where she organized care for wounded soldiers. Nightingale’s emphasis on sanitation, organization, and patient care transformed the field of nursing. She went on to establish the first secular nursing school, the Nightingale School of Nursing, in 1860.

Mary Eliza Mahoney

Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first African American licensed nurse in the United States. She became a role model for nurses of all races and promoted integration and equal opportunities for minority nurses.

Clara Barton

Known as the "Angel of the Battlefield," Clara Barton provided aid to soldiers during the American Civil War. She later founded the American Red Cross, which continues to be a vital humanitarian organization.

Edith Cavell

A British nurse celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides during World War I. She was executed by the Germans for her actions but remains a symbol of compassion and bravery.

Lillian Wald

Founder of public health nursing in the United States, Lillian Wald established the Henry Street Settlement in New York City, providing healthcare and social services to the poor and immigrant communities.
